How furnaces heat your home.

Though all furnaces utilize your HVAC system in the same way, they vary slightly in how they handle heat regulation.

Different types of gas furnaces

The three primary types of gas furnaces are single-stage, two-stage, and modulating. They all look and sound the same, but some underlying functional differences set them apart.

Single-Stage Furnace

Single-stage furnaces are the most basic type of furnace, with only one setting. When on, your furnace operates at the maximum flame setting—there is no middle ground between the system being on or off. This furnace has trouble pushing cold air to the top floor of a two-storey home.

Two-Stage Furnace

A two-stage furnace has three operating modes: off, low fire, and high fire. Low fire provides consistent and even heat distribution. High fire kicks in when it's extremely cold out. You can also adjust two-stage furnaces to an in-between setting. They are more expensive initially, but the ability to operate at a lower capacity allows you to save more money over time.

Modulating Furnace

Modulating furnaces offer an advanced type of heating technology that delivers more even temperature throughout your home. With a modulating furnace, the flame increases and decreases in finer increments to help maintain your home’s temperature. This reduces temperature fluctuations and helps meet your comfort needs more precisely. Kind of like your car’s engine adjusting the cruise control settings in the city or on the highway as needed.
